Deadpool Bugle: Interview With Deadpool Movie Producer Lauren Shuler Donner

  • DeadpoolFool · 2 months ago
Why do they keep telling us the same thing over and over again? give us something new!!

I'm glad the movie is still being made, but does it need to be a reboot when it's so easy to fix the Wolverine Origins Deadpool? Even the director said that since the film is an origin film your only seeing Deadpool's origin but not his final result. You don't see what he turns into at the end, so basically we only got half of that version story. That story is incomplete why not finish it, instead of just dropping it entirely?
  • deadpoolandfriends · 2 months ago
I think they're telling us the same thing over and over again is because people like me keep posting videos about it and they want to let the Deadpool Fans know they haven't forgotten the movie.
  • DeadpoolFool · 2 months ago
yah but at least give us a little something new. It's the same stuff over and over again....

    - Reboot
    - 4th wall
    - Ryan Reynolds

Same three things always gets mentioned, at least in this interview we are treated with the kind of new information that they are looking for writers and that one of the producers whats Blind Al in the film. Which is good since I want Blind Al in the film as well.
  • Mr_Badcrumble · 2 months ago
Good stuff, but it's not really anything we haven't heard already. Still, it's a good reminder!
  • Underdax · 2 months ago
I don't understand people referring to it as a reboot. It's the first Deadpool movie ever. How does not tying into another movie's continuity make it a reboot? Do I just not understand what "reboot" means?

I like how it sounds like they're looking most closely at Deadpool prior to Cable and Deadpool. In fact, the only mentioned aspect of Deadpool taken from after he gained his own title is Blind Al... maybe she's reading through the comics very slowly and hasn't gotten far beyond the two mini series.
  • Capo_Del_Bandito · 2 months ago
Blind Al wasn't in the first two mini-series.

But trying to make it the "Cable and Deadpool" style Deadpool would be convoluted and messy. For the purposes of a movie, it should be kept simple.

As for the 'reboot', it's because acknowledging that horrible trash of a movie would be a bad start. Best to make it modern, dark and cynical.

The problem with keeping it in the same canon as the previous movie, besides the Baraka-pool madness, the crappy weapon X-ness, and the fact that Deadpool would be 50 or so (even with the healing factor).

The other movie took place in the late 60s/early 70s, even given time for Wolverine to run away from the project. To have it take place in the 2000's, he'd be at least 40 or 50's.

And come on, who wants old man Deadpool?
  • Ericon · 2 months ago
Yeah, who wants to see old man wolverine? It's not as if Deadpool's healing factor makes his age irrelevant, like it does for wolverine. Even if he got the healing factor from Wolverine.
  • Capo_Del_Bandito · 2 months ago
His attitude would be different. Not his physical age. It tends to alter one's personality as you get older.

Also: Old Man Logan sucked and Mark Miller sucks whenever he doing anything for the big Two publishers.
  • Ericon · 2 months ago
When Deadpool got trapped in the big freezer and showed up 200 years in the future, was his personality any different?
  • Capo_Del_Bandito · 2 months ago
While trapped in a freezer? Sure of course not. Interacting with society and people for a few decades? Yeah that'll change anyone.
  • Ericon · 2 months ago
Not if the writers don't want it to.
  • Capo_Del_Bandito · 2 months ago
Nah, marvel's doing the grim and gritty 'real' crap these days, 'with a social message' crap these days.

It would be completely retarded as well to be alive for many decades, unless he was in seclusion, and not change at all.
  • Underdax · 2 months ago
You misunderstood both of the things I said- when I said that "the only mentioned aspect of Deadpool taken from after he gained his own series is Blind Al," I meant that Blind Al is the only character mentioned in the spiel who was created after the mini-series. Yes, it was a fairly unwieldy sentence.

I also wasn't saying that I think the movie should tie into the Wolverine movie, I was saying that I don't think failing to tie into that movie would technically make it a reboot. I've always understood a reboot to refer to starting the continuity of an actual series over, like Batman Begins did with the Batman movies. Basing a movie on a character who happened to have a small role in a different movie, and making that movie have nothing to do with that cameo, doesn't seem like it would technically be a reboot. It's the first boot. If there were a sequel to the Wolverine movie, and that sequel had the Deadpool character in it, it would most likely still be the same Deadpool that was created for Wolverine: Origins (or X-Men Origins: Wolverine or whatever it was called.)
  • Capo_Del_Bandito · 2 months ago
Ok i get your Blind Al reference now.

But as for the continuity, it's better just to 'reboot' and ignore the old in-movie canon. Otherwise his ties to Weapon X would be through his joining Team X, etc etc. I'd rather he just be a guy who gets picked up and experimented on by Weapon X and then rejected and does his own thing, none of the team x junk.
  • neverthrive · 2 months ago
the team x part was probably my favorite segment of the film. it didn't feel like it lasted long enough, yet the whole movie kinda felt like that, it was too rushed and was set at too rapid of a pace. i do have a question about that though. was wade supposed to be a mutant before he was experimented on or was he just fucking fast enough to slice bullets and shit. god they fucked up deadpool.
  • RoQ · 2 months ago
OMFG!, I totally want an "Old Man Wade" min-series written by Mark Millar and penciled by McNiven
  • Capo_Del_Bandito · 2 months ago
You're a bad person, and you should feel bad.

*Bonus points to those who get the reference.
  • Name · 2 months ago
    1. he meant reboot of the charecter not any of the movies (as there are none)
    2. Blind Al was seen before C&D and very little after
  • Underdax · 2 months ago
    1. OK.
    2. I know, I was referring to the first time he got his own series. Deadpool's involvement with Slayback, Black Tom, and Weasel was introduced before that point.
  • crazedjustice888 · 2 months ago
Man...I am SO glad him doing GL isn't going to dampen this movie. In my opinion he is perfect for it.

Underdax: I think by reboot, they just forget that deadpool in Origins ever existed. But you are right. Wrong word choice.
  • deadpoolandfriends · 2 months ago
    Thank you Mrs Donner.

Call me delusional, but I think this is going to be a case where the internet is going to play a big part in keep this movie on track. I think the consistent "buzzing" and "ranting" done by the Deadpool fans (Which i'm clearly guilty of), is going to help the producers and everyone involved with their eye on the ball. Now i don't look at alot of Captain America (or other heroes) fan sites, But i gotta assume Deadpool Fans are some of the most Vocal (just from personal experience). Maybe the occasional Video Rant about Demanding our money back if the movie doesn't get made will help and/or has helped inspire them to keep the ball rolling on this and to keep the fans informed. WOW that is incredibly conceded of me...

And i loved the line about breath the 4th wall when she said,
"I don't know that Fox will agree with all our decisions, but we'll see!"
Which makes me gotta believe they're going to make fun on Barakapool.
  • Snozzberries · 2 months ago
I thought she said that possibly because Fox can by hardheaded.

"What? He's not going to look like Barakapool in this one? Hmmm... I dunno about that."
"Of course he's not going to look like Barakapool. Barakapool sucked big hairy buns."
    "We like Brakapool."
    "You're a ho."
    "Bitch."
"We're doing this thing true to the comics."
"There'd better be a Barakapool comic..."
    "Fortunately, no."
"=(.... Fine. You can do it."

    8D
  • deadpoolandfriends · 2 months ago
LOL you're most likely correct and probably described the conversation down to the letter.
  • Snozzberries · 2 months ago
Thanks, I was channeling Fox as I wrote that. And I don't mean my tv was on the Fox network ;)
  • Blastback · 2 months ago
I think you nailed it. The execs at fox just don't know when to leave stuff alone. Why do you think Lucas was so insistant that when he made Star Wars he had to have full creative control, he knew exactly what he was dealing with. And of course, the guy that helped him get that contract ended up quiting over how much they tried to take.
  • Leroy · 2 months ago
she said she didnt know if fox would agree.......I'm concerned. pretty happy with the interview till the end. "dont know if fox will agree with these desicions but we'll see."

    crap.

    I'm frightened! hold me
  • DeadpooltheHun · 2 months ago
I wouldnt mind if he breaked the 4th wall like he did with bullseye ("When was the last time we met" "Issue 16. Greece")
But talking directly to the audience in a movie??? FAIL
  • scrubby · 2 months ago
Deadpool will talk to whoever he damn well pleases. Although, perhaps you could write in and request that he doesn't address you personally. Then, the rest of us can have a conversation with deadpool (probably about you) and enjoy ourselves.
  • Capo_Del_Bandito · 2 months ago
And that's the over the top 4th wall breaking that would make the movie bland.
  • scrubby · 2 months ago
When the carebears asked me to stand up and say I care...I fuckin did. And you know what? Turns out, we saved the day.
  • Capo_Del_Bandito · 2 months ago
And just goes to show that to make a movie it requires talent, maturity, and a keen mind.

Thank god you're not a writer.
  • ]v[ E G A D U C ]< · 2 months ago
"That's a joke, son. A flag waver. You're built too low. The fast ones go over your head. Ya got a hole in your glove. I keep pitchin' 'em and you keep missin' 'em. Ya gotta keep your eye on the ball. Eye. Ball. I almost had a gag, son. Joke, that is." "Nice boy but about as sharp as a sack of wet mice." - Foghorn Leghorn
  • Capo_Del_Bandito · 2 months ago
I get the joke. It's just a very lame joke. It's why I said he lacks wit.

    Talk about over the head...
  • ]v[ E G A D U C ]< · 2 months ago
    1. I actually found his joke kind of funny, but thats just my warped sense of humor.
    2. I actually just finished watching that Cartoon on tv and figured this would be a perfect time to use that quote.
    3. I actually thought you were serious. Sarcasm is very hard to display online.

eh whatever. That foghorn quote is still golden. If the Deadpool movie uses and ALMOST Looney Tunes style of situational humor it would be great (has to be implimented well though)
  • Capo_Del_Bandito · 2 months ago
I think it can be done, but has to be handled properly.

When I think about 4th wall breaking on a movie/series/etc, I think to old Merry Melodies cartoons where Bugs Bunny or Daffy Duck would give a look to the audience, or cover their lips from view and go "he's got a few screws loose" or something along those lines.

I think in the movie it could be done properly, a wink, a quick comment, something small.
  • Ericon · 2 months ago
I'd hate it if they pulled a john cusack
  • Capo_Del_Bandito · 2 months ago
Like High Fidelity or Gross Point Blank? Whole monologues with the audience?
  • the_ace_of_knaves · 2 months ago
I think narration would work. Many, many films have had the main character narrate. Maybe even make it a slight satire of those old school hard boiled noir films, but give it the Deadpool twist. With Deadpool, you could get away with that.

Or just showing that he knows he is in a movie, without directly speaking to the audience. You know the line "This is all someones imagination! There is this guy, with a type writer..." something like that could be pretty cool I think.

Or if you wanna be more direct have Pool quote famous lines from famous movies with a knowing grin visible under his mask. Have him pull out a shot gun and go "I like to keep this handy, for close encounters" for example.

But what I think is essential, is to make sure it isn't too goofy. Play off his fourth wall breaking as though the guy really is completely wacked out of his mind. Another character reacting to him like "WTF are you on about Wade?".
  • Capo_Del_Bandito · 2 months ago
I think for the purposes of a movie, I'm with Ericon on this. It needs to be more subtle, a wink, a nod. A quick remark.

Narrating the story is always an option, but I think one or two instances, a sudden "You'll get this later" nod to the audience. Or confusing the hell out of a tied up/held down target, them looking around confused when he makes a quick remark about the target as if they're not there and he's explaining something to us. Kinda amps up his screw loose factor too.
  • Ericon · 2 months ago
Exactly. I don't want to see that kind of 4th wall breaking.

I want to see something a tad more subtle, like the famous line where DP mentions meeting bullseye in issue 16
  • Capo_Del_Bandito · 2 months ago
I still think the Loony Tunes/Merry Melodies cartoonish 4th wall breaking would be interesting. Or maybe like the few instances in Fight Club where they're explaining a trap/plan to the audience.

    I dunno. Something like that.
  • Pitalla · 2 months ago
so black tom or slayback as a villian huh? I would go with Black tom and The UNstopabble juggernaut.
Weee! with Blind Al and the Weasel, also hopes to see siryn in there.
  • Name · 2 months ago
juggernaut would be fun, if it was the same actor as in the third x-men film
  • Blastback · 2 months ago
And therein lies the potential problem with a reboot.

How do you keep Wade's ties with any X-men characters that have allready appeared. This could potentialy prevent Siryn from appearing, as well as Juggs and Wolvie.

And I hope they set Ajax up as a future villian, I think he may just be Deadpool's best, of the stories I've read atleast.
  • DeadpooltheHun · 2 months ago
^ Completely agree. Replace Juggs methinks, but keep Black Tom and Siryn, who to replace Juggs with though? Ajax, fantastic story, loved the whole vengeance thing, should they mix that with the later Agent of weapon X arc?
  • roshambo · 2 months ago
There's some new news in there, too:
Magneto is on the back burner, and Deadpool is on the fast-track.
It looks like it'll be Wolverine 2, Deadpool, XMen First Class, then maybe Magneto.
I'm glead to see that Deadpool is a priority over Magneto.
  • MercWadeWilson · 2 months ago
Im just glad they keep reminding us that they're actually making the movie. Plus i heard they will have a screenwriter by November. Sweetness!
  • DeadpoolWahsinn · 2 months ago
i think they should stay away from the comics. it be nice to see a new deadpool story in theaters not just somthing thats been done already. they could have DP doing merc work in mexico and come to the states after the events in X3 have him duke it out with wolverine and the x-men.
  • MercWadeWilson · 2 months ago
I had a thought of a possible director and producers. Brett Ratner as director (X3), David S. Goyer (Writer of Dark knight), Ryan Reynolds, and Lauren Shuler Donner as producers. I know that X3 kinda sucked, but if think about it he kinda fits the bill cause the movie didnt fee llike a X movie and if you think of him doin the same basic thing for the DP movie, he could pull it over. My thoghts. Plus David Goyer should be apart of the project cause he came up with RR playing DP, and RR should be a producer cause he is a DP fan and all and hes funny as hell so it could work with him as a producer.
  • Capo_Del_Bandito · 2 months ago
Ratner focuses more on slapstick instead of dark humor. And the fact that X3 sucked more than "kinda".

While Goyer can get a decent thought down on paper, i'm not sure he's the mind you wanna put on something that should be dark and humorous with action overtones. Batman and Blade movies aren't exactly something that are in the same category as a Deadpool movie. It should be dark, gritty to a degree, with action as well.

The humor in Blade Trinity (where Goyer directed) was also cartoonish/slapstick, something Deadpool should only be slightly, not constantly.
  • Blastback · 2 months ago
Let's not forget that in regards to The Dark Knight, Goyer is a cowriter. Chris and Jonothan Nolan get equal credit for the story and script respectivly.

Maybe Quentin Tarantino would be willing to do it. Or maybe the guy from District 9, which had dark humor, good acting and story, action and a real soul to it.
  • DeadpooltheHun · 2 months ago
Quentin Tarinto said himself that if he were ever to do a superhero movie, he would make unique, since fans are fickle. We definetly do NOT want him involved in this.
  • Blastback · 2 months ago
Well, never mind that idea then.
  • MercWadeWilson · 2 months ago
X3 wasn't that bad. Yeah it sucked compared to the other X movies, but I think the guy could possibly pull it off. But I will agree about the slapstick stuff. Plus David Goyer deserves to be something on the project if you payed attention to the last post. Who do think would be an adequate to be producer and director?
  • Capo_Del_Bandito · 2 months ago
No no, it was a bad movie. Period. It's up there with Transformers 2 in the 'let's focus on shiny CGI and gargantuan plot holes and no real development instead of producing a good movie" department.

Producer I'd say go with Avi Arid, or however you spell it. He has a great respect for the character, even before Deadpool became a big name. And his son's an even bigger fan, so there'd be a die hard fan hopefully near or on the set and saying "Hey dad, hey DAD they're doing it wrong". Or something.

Director? I dunno. Part of me wants Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead/Hot Fuzz) director, but only if he'd keep the slapstick to minimum. He can do the cerebral as well as the in your face funny, as well as dark and gritty when it's called for.

The other part of me says get a newbie with talent.
  • MercWadeWilson · 2 months ago
Alright fine. No Ratner. Good choice for Edgar Wright though. And good point with Psylocke. But still going with Goyer with the project
  • Capo_Del_Bandito · 2 months ago
    Maybe as a WRITER only.
  • MercWadeWilson · 2 months ago
Thank you, Capo_Del_Bandito. Here's possibly a better idea for a director: Neveldine/Taylor. I mean the guys did make Crank, and I heard it was gruesome and funny as hell so I wanted to through his name out there.
  • Capo_Del_Bandito · 2 months ago
Hmm, the directing style, especially the action scenes are really fun, but the style of humor is a bit too...eh, not 'serious' I guess is a good way to explain it.

I guess if Goyer writes it and they stick to his style of humor, mostly wordplay and sarcasm/dark etc like in Blade Trinity, with pop culture references of course, and just used him as a director and stuck to Goyer's idea it could work.
  • MercWadeWilson · 2 months ago
Well then, we have a winner, Bandito.
  • Blastback · 2 months ago
Gotta go with Capo_Del_Bandito on X-3's sucktasticness. Ratner admited that he crammed characters in just to give parts to his friends, which ultimatly prevented anyone from getting enough focus to be developed. He's singlehandely responsible for turning Psylocke into a bad guy, the writers had nothing to do with it. Keep him away.
  • Name · 2 months ago
I'd be happy with the 4th wall stuff if it was done like in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2. Like, for instance, when the heroes fight the Tinkerer in one of the last missions, and you have Deadpool:

"You should have taken up (spoiler)'s offer, Deadpool!

Yeah, like I even had the chance! The writers said something about branching conversations and whatnot..." or something like that. Make subtle references, you know?
  • Blastback · 2 months ago
Another option is to make refrences to other movies that the actors have been in.
  • Capo_Del_Bandito · 2 months ago
    Ok that idea I like.
  • Blastback · 2 months ago
Like how in the issue of Cable and Deadpool where Wolverine and Deadpool fight, Deadpool mentions Wolverine singing the soundtrack to The Boy From Oz, a Broadway musical that Hugh Jackman won a Tony for(Damn that man is talented).
  • MercWadeWilson · 2 months ago
    Cool.

Sad news about the Magneto movie though, that was my second most anticipated x-men movie.
